Kagoshima-Chuo Station is the main railway station in Kagoshima, Japan. It is the southern terminus of the Kyushu Shinkansen and is located on the Kagoshima Main Line, and Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line. Before the Kyushu Shinkansen opened in 2004, the station was called Nishi-Kagoshima Station.
鹿児島中央駅は、鹿児島県の県庁所在地・鹿児島市の代表駅です。
2004年（平成16年）3月13日の九州新幹線（鹿児島ルート）部分開業に伴い、旧駅名の西鹿児島駅（にしかごしまえき。通称「西駅」）から現在の駅名に改称されました。
地元では「中央駅」と呼ばれています。。
JR九州の駅としては乗降客数が博多駅、小倉駅に次いで第3位、取扱収入が博多駅に次いで第2位です。
なお、当駅は、旧称の西鹿児島駅時代から寝台特急、特急などの優等列車をはじめほとんどの列車が発着し、鹿児島市の中心駅としての役割を果たしています。
また、日本最南端の新幹線停車駅であり、複数の鉄道路線が接続する日本最南端の駅です。
JRグループとして日本最南端の自動改札機設置駅でもあります。
2011年（平成23年）3月12日の九州新幹線全線開業に伴い、山陽新幹線との直通運転が行われてますが、早朝の熊本駅始発の上り1本を除き、全て当駅発着となっています。
当駅から新大阪駅までの所要時間は、「みずほ」が最速3時間45分、「さくら」が最速4時間10分です。
