Woolmet Colliery was opened in 1898 by the Niddrie and Benhar Coal Company (later part of the National Coal Board Lothians Area) and produced domestic, steam and shale coal, averaging at 825 tons per day, production peaking in 1960. The workforce averaged around 863, transferring to the new Superpit at nearby Monktonhall when Woolmet closed in 1966. Woolmet was retained as the Scottish Mines Training School until it finally closed in the late 80's after which the bing was landscaped providing a green leisure area for the local community.
