Geocache Description:

04/04/1997 was a clear 56 degree spring night. Two lives would be taken away and their families would be changed forever.

At 0030 a Douglas C54A-DC - tail N83FA was taking off from Griffin, GA airport on a positioning flight to Americus, GA. This was a routine flight for the captain who had over 12,000 flight hours and was familiar with this aircraft. The co captain had over 5,000 hours and was also familiar with this type of aircraft.

As the aircraft went through it’s run up all seemed normal and the captain started his take off roll. A witness who happened to also be a mechanic for this aircraft was watching as the aircraft was taking off. He noted that during the airplane's takeoff roll on runway 14 the color of the no. 1 engine exhaust flame changed from blue to yellow, accompanied by an audible change in the engine power level. The nose of the airplane yawed left and the left wing dipped. This occurred when the airplane was about 3/4 down the 3,700 foot runway. The aircraft overran the runway, ran across Zebulon Road. It then slammed into the vacant Piggly Wiggly building near the Spalding Square parking lot and caught fire.

For more information please check website (visit link)

Both the captain and co-captain perished in the crash and resulting fire. The fire destroyed the building but the foundation is still there. There were no injuries on the ground.

This cache is placed as a reminder to cherish every moment you have and to the memory of these lost aviators. This cache is a very small container a magnetic nano. This one will not hold anything except the log. Be sure to bring your own pen. Please rehide as you found it.
