Geocache Description:

St Julitta’s Church is on the A4086 just outside Capel Curig. If you come from the Village, turn left when you see the church down a relatively steep lane where there is limited parking adjacent to the church.
As with most churchyards, please take care when you walk around as the ground can be uneven. Also please try to walk around the graves rather than over them.

So why “Friends of St Julitta”?

Originally known as Curig's Chapel, the church gave its name to the hamlet of Capel Curig - the early chapel would have been of timber and wattle construction possibly on this site at the first crossing of the river. The main building of the current church is likely to be the work of the 13th and 14th centuries, and retains the "double square" plan of nave and chancel.

In the 19th century this old church became too small to accommodate the congregation and a new church was opened in 1883. The new church was dedicated to St. Curig, the boy martyr and the dedication of this old church was then changed to St. Julitta - Curig's mother

The church remained in use until the 1970's when it was deconsecrated. The Friends of St. Julitta's leased the building from the Church of Wales in 1998 with the aim of preserving the building, and restoring it for use by the community and visitors to the area. Hence “Friends of St Julitta”!

The cemetery is the last resting place for generations of people from Capel Curig and many of those killed in mountain accidents. You will find a rich history of the people written on the gravestones. The churchyard is also a haven for a wide range of insects, birds, mammals and plants - it is being managed with conservation in mind in the interests of wildlife.

St Julitta’s Church holds many more tales and secrets, why not pop in if you have time? The Church welcomes visitors and is open daily between 9am & 5pm – you need to get the key from the Village Shop. Whilst looking around, please remember that they are places of worship and contemplation, and the heritage is much valued by the local communities.

The cache is a small black container and it has a logbook, slate coin and pencil inside. Happy hunting!
Note: The co-ordinates were averaged out over several readings.
