The Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) is participating in its second international mission with an EOD Team. The first such mission was with the Coalition Forces in Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom, from 2003 to 2005.

Since November 2006, a GNR EOD Team has been integrated into the Guarda Nacional Republicana contingent in Operational Theatre, East Timor in an extension of the mission of UNMIT (United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor).

Until now passed through the territory nine EOD Teams, where they made a work of excellence, covering thousands of km's around the small but very rugged territory of East Timor, destroying hundreds of UXO/ERW (Unexploded Ordinance / Explosive Remnants of War) left behind by decades of conflict, from World War II to the present.

During the mission of the 9.º Contingent, EOD team went through a moment of great embarrassment and regret at losing an element in a fateful car accident, when the team traveled the path from Viqueque to fulfill another EOD mission, in June 21, 2010.
