Geocache Description:

The cache is located near the information boards along the Rio Grande River. Plastic jar wrapped in duck tape with black lid. In 1863 a group of prospectors led by Charles Baker came to the San Juan Mountains. Leaving the area to winter in New Mexico, one of their wagons was damaged, so they left it behind near this gap in the mountains. This small canyon was carved out by the Rio Grande River. A wagon wheel was found somewhere near here in the 1870's and local legend beliefs say it is the remnant of that same wagon. Miners referred to the location of this area as "the gap where the wagon wheel was found". In time, the name stuck and it is now called Wagon Wheel Gap.
