Geocache Description:

St Mary's Chislehurst

Another in the ever expanding Church Micro Series, started by Sadexploration.

A simple offset magnetic micro on flat terrain based on St Mary's Church in Chislehurst. A very narrow road without a footpath is the obvious route between the Church and the cache - so be careful.

St Mary's Catholic Church was built in the French decorated style by a local family, with an adjoining Priest's House. It is hidden away at the back of Chislehurst Common and has little passing traffic, except during school times.

It was the initial resting place for Louis Napoleon, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, on his death in 1873. Louis Napoleon had been living in Camden Place, now Chislehurst Golf Club, since 1871 with his wife the Empress Eugénie and their son the Prince Imperial, having fled Paris at the start of the Franco Prussian war. In 1879 the Prince Imperial volunteered to serve in the Zulu War and was killed in an ambush. His body was returned to Chislehurst and also buried in St Mary's. Empress Eugénie built the Mortuary Chapel at St Mary's Church specifically to house the remains of both her husband and son, although she later moved them both to St Michael's Abbey, Farnborough, Hampshire. A marble memorial slab set into the floor of St Mary's Church reminds visitors of its royal past.

The coordinates will take you to a notice board which contains a phone number 07775 ABCDEF. The cache is within 400m at:

N 51 24.A(D+F)(C+D) E 0 4.DC(E-B)

Some of the roads in this area are very narrow; I would not suggest driving down Crown Lane in anything larger than a Smart car. There is also no footpath on Crown lane, so take care. The cache is wheelchair accessible.
