Perhaps the most difficult logistically of the 'Doing the Dodds' series, Starling Dodd could well be considered to be a long way from anywhere; and even further back to somewhere! It is certainly one of the less frequented Wainwrights. The main claim to fame it holds is that it is the hill on which Wainwright finished his fieldwork for the guides on September 10th 1965.
In the book ‘A Dictionary of Lake District Place-Names’ Diana Whaley suggests that the name is derived from Styalien, or 'Alan's path.' Sty being a steep path. A Dodd is generally a steep compact rounded hill.
Doubtless this cache will cause some head scratching amongst those members of the caching community in West Cumbria who like to concerntrate on their nearest unfound cache page.
The cache is a small box containing only a log book and pencil. It is about 70 metres from the summit cairn in the direction of the head of Ennerdale Water. The cache is placed under a rock. Please see spoilers and description as it is a long way to go for a DNF.
The cache is placed with the permission of the landowner.
