Geocache Description:

This is the second in a series of caches placed by the South Florida National Parks to highlight progress on Everglades restoration. Since 2009, several major projects have broken ground across south Florida in an effort to restore America’s Everglades. This cache encourages you to explore the Hoover Dam of the Everglades first-hand, and witness current efforts to reconnect the famed River of Grass.

This cache will simultaneously inspire admiration for a historic marvel of engineering, and reveal the high costs of its unintended consequences. It will also introduce you to one of the most talked about Everglades restoration projects of the last two decades.

Finding this cache will require a detour off of a major roadway in favor of an unpaved, gravel road. Visitors are encouraged to exercise caution as the highway often experiences high volumes of traffic. The cache location is occasionally overgrown and visitors should be wary of insects or poisonous plants while accessing the cache. Summertime visitors should be prepared for some bushwhacking and mosquitoes!

Please note that none of the caches in this series are located within Everglades National Park. Rather, they have been developed alongside our restoration partners and have been placed elsewhere throughout the much larger Greater Everglades Ecosystem. Each cache has been placed with the permission of the responsible land owners in an effort to highlight the ongoing work of restoration that aims to protect America’s Everglades for the enjoyment of future generations.
