Geocache Description:

The first cache at Yorktown's new Granite Knolls Park!

Welcome to Granite Knolls!
Granite Knolls was purchased by the Town of Yorktown in October 2010. It is being developed for hiking and mountain biking. Eventually, it is hoped, that sports fields may be included at a more level section of the park as well.

The property has a long history, including having once been farmland, owned by the Jesuits, and part of the same property which is now the Phoenix Academy on the other side of Stony Street.

Slices of granite lie scattered near the centerpiece of the park - a large glacier erratic, also known as the "Giant Boulder". Single track trails pass through many small quarries and remnants of quarry operations can be seen along a woods road. Rumor has it, that if you climb to the top of the "Giant Boulder" you can find the names of some of the quarry workers etched into the stone.

Currently, access to the park is from the Yorktown Taconic Trailway, near "THE" Bridge. You will follow the blazed pink trail into the park. At this time, there are several "No Trespassing" or "Private Property" signs near the trailhead. These are from before Yorktown acquired the property. They are scheduled to come down in the near future. The trails ARE public property.

Parking is available at the YTT trailhead on Buckhorn Street. The coordinates are below.

Happy Hunting!
