Geocache Description:

This cache was placed in 2011 as part of the first Geonuts Passport Challenge. Even though the challenge is over, this cache remains for your discovery!

Permission obtained from the Minnesota DNR. This cache is located within the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area.

If searching during the winter, snowshoes are recommended as the trails are not groomed or plowed.

Understanding the history of the Cuyuna Range mining era can be quite difficult. The Armour Mine is one example of a mine with many names. This cache is located next to the now Armour Mine Lake.

When the first shaft was put down here in 1910, it was known as the Meacham mine. The name was soon changed to Armour Mine, and later changed again to Armour No. 1 Mine in honor of C.D. Armour and Phillip Armour, of Chicago, both of whom where stockholders and directors of the company conducting the mining.

Yet another name given to this mine during the mining era was Interstate Mine because it was originally developed and operated by Interstate Exploration Company. Today it is known as Armour #1.
