The Haven, Third Avenue
“The Haven” former home of the Mills Family and now the Plotland Museum on Third Avenue is the only remaining dwelling on the entire estate. Mena and Fredrick Mills brought the property in 1934. Their family continued to live their until 1983. In the 1970’s one of their sons even ran a small electronic business from home.
They bought three adjacent plots for £20 with a £45 mortgage to buy building materials, and lived in one of the sheds to the right until the house was completed. Like many plotlander the Mills family were virtually self sufficient.
Relics from the second world war still survive in the undergrowth around Dunton. The Haven site includes a complete Anderson shelter.
The Haven has been preserved as it would have been, as a family home. It is open to visitors (times on display. Currently weekends 2pm-4pm) and a guide is always available to tell you The Havens’ story and answer any questions.
