Gordons Hill is the highest point in Salem, NH at 380 feet above sea level. It is located on the Windham/Salem border near RT 111. The cliffs you see on the new stretch of RT 111 are a portion of the hill. DON’T, and we repeat, don’t attempt this cache from RT 111. There is no place to park and the climb is dangerous. However, the Duck and the Beagle still thought this area needed a cache. So they put their collective brains, geocaching skills, and GPSr together and came up with this cache. We hope you have as much enjoyment finding it as we did setting it up. Even if you don’t have fun we certainly did.
This cache started out to be a one stage cache. However, as we proceeded on the trail(s), we realized that if we were going to find our way out, we needed to take some waypoint readings. There are a number of ATV trails that crisscross the area, and it is easy to go down the wrong trail. At times we felt like flies walking in a spider web. A frequent comment between the duck and the beagle was “which way do we go”. We also realized that you would want these WP readings as well so you could find your way out. We didn’t want to get any 911 calls from you. So we turned this cache into a multi. You may want to keep track of the waypoint coordinates but do NOT take the slips of paper; leave them for the next person. There are three waypoints before you get to the final. The cache coordinates shown are for the first waypoint. The other WPs are located at key spots so you can stay on the correct trail, we hope, as you hike out. We are not going to tell you what happened to us. The waypoints are a mix of bison tubes and small containers and provide the coordinates to the next waypoint. The final is an ammo can filled with SWAG, several geocoins, and an un-activated TB tag for FTF.
To encourage you before you start, we have provided a WEB link about the climbing history of the highest mountains of each of the seven continents. So, 380 feet should be an easy climb and you are not starting at sea level either. The short little legs of the duck and the beagle were able to do it. Good luck and let us know about your experience. Parking is at the end of Aladdin Road at the coordinates shown below.
