Lesson # 4: Muggles A non-geocacher. Based on "Muggle" from the Harry Potter series, which is a non-magical person. Usually this term is used after a non geocacher looks puzzled after befriending a geocacher searching for a cache, or when a non-geocacher accidentally finds a cache. Geomuggles are mostly harmless. (Definition from the Geocaching Book of Knowledge)
Even though there aren’t very many muggles around here, you are within 30 metres of a busy road. You never know who may be watching from their car stuck in traffic. We need to protect our caches from being muggled and the best way of doing that is to take care while we are searching and going to and from some of the obscure locations that caching takes us to. Sometimes it may be best not to approach a cache if doing so would create too much attention from nearby muggles. It may be necessary to go away and have lunch or a coffee and come back later. In some cases where muggles are having a large and permanent looking party or picnic it may be better to come back on a different day. There are many things you can do to help you blend in to the environment when muggles are around. Just pretending to talk on a mobile often helps people to not notice you. Having a camera or even using the mobile again and pretending to take photos can deflect interest from muggles. Sometimes having children helping you search can make it more difficult to blend in.
What response do you give if a muggle asks what you are doing? Do you…..
A. Respond that you lost your wedding ring and risk them helping you search
B. Say you are a council worker there to inspect the structural integrity of whatever you are searching. (It may help to be wearing fluorescent clothing for this option)
C. Say “I’m busting for the loo and I’m looking for a place to go”
D. Say “I’m lost and don’t know who I am or where I’m going”
E. Say you are a scientist doing research on the soil/water quality of the local area for Norwest Geocaching college.
F. Act drunk and pretend to throw up
G. Ignore them and pretend you don’t speak English or
H. Tell them the truth and educate them to the wonders of geocaching
