Geocache Description:

This cache was placed as part of the original Athens County Geotrail (traditional portion). The incentive is gone, but the cache is still available for finding/logging. Thank you for supporting Athens County geocaches.

The coordinates posted above (and duplicated as the Location 1 waypoint) will take you to the first of eight stages in this multi. The first six stages can be completed within the historic Nelsonville Public Square. Stage 7 and the final location are located within a couple blocks of the square. Information needed to determine the final coordinates can, in all cases, be gathered from the vehicle. If the weather is nice, we encourage you to get out and enjoy the history of each stop.

Using the waypoints provided at the bottom of this page, determine the following (each of the underlined letters will be represented by a single number you find at the designated locations):

  • Location 1: The plaque here identifies the building name with A big letters
  • Location 2: The plaque contains a four-digit number B C D E
  • Location 3: The stone marker reads "Lot donated by Daniel Nelson, Sr." and the four-digit number is F G H I
  • Location 4: The handrail here has J Star Bricks embedded in it
  • Location 5: From the historical marker, K L mines were affected by the event described
  • Location 6: The plaque indicates the building was built in M N O P
  • Location 7: From the historical marker, the number of the locomotive is Q R and the marker number (lower right-hand corner) is S T U V
  • Alternate Location 7: If driveway access to the historical marker for Location 7 is blocked, the last four digits on the Hocking Valley Scenic Railroad sign are W X Y Z
The north coordinate is 39 2 [V or W] . J A [Q or Y]
The west coordinate is 082 1 [G - H] . A E [L – K]

Note: For the north coordinate, substitute the value for either of the letters within the brackets. For the west coordinate, perform the simple mathematical operations within the brackets to determine the value.

About This Location

Unlike many of the surrounding mining towns, Nelsonville discovered a way to flourish when coal mining waned. The town developed an artistic side and restored its public square into a downtown arts district. One of the most famous local attractions is The Hocking Valley Railway, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This not-so-sleepy hamlet is also the home of Hocking College and a nationally-recognized manufacturer of outdoor gear.
