Dieser Cache führt Dich zu dem vor ca. 320 Millionen Jahren (im Ober-Karbon) entstandenen Gedauer Konglomerat, im Naturschutzgebiet Tatternsteine mit Talaue im Gedautal bei Stolberg, und liegt somit in der Niederrheinischen Bucht am Rande des Rheinischen Schiefergebirges.
Die Tatternsteine genannte, ca. 5m hohe Felsformation, entstand aus den Ablagerungen in einem breiten Flussdelta eines aus einem südlich vom Gedautal gelegenen Gebirge (heute Eifel) stammenden Strom, und bestanden zum überwiegenden Teil aus Gesteinsbruchstücken und Verwitterungsschutt. Im Laufe der Zeit verfestigten sich diese, und es entstand eine Art Naturbeton, das Gedauer Konglomerat.
Konglomerate sind meist grobkörnige Sedimentpartikel aus verschiedenen Gesteinsarten. Durch den längeren Transport können diese aber auch feinkörnig bis sandig sein, und haben eine abgerundete Form. Als Bindemittel dient toniges, kieseliges oder kalkiges Material, welches die Härte des Konglomerats bestimmt.
Das Gedauer Konglomerat besteht aus grobkörnigen, gut gerundeten Quarzgeröllen und schwach gerundeten Lyditen, sowie aus einzelnen Tonstein- und Kohlenbruchstücken. Das kieselige Bindemittel führt zu der hohen Härte des Gesteins. Es erreicht eine Mächtigkeit von bis zu 30m.
Die auf die oben beschriebene Weise, im gesamten Muldenbereich der Inde entstandenen Höhenzüge im Raum Stolberg, erreichen aber in der Regel eine deutlich geringere Mächtigkeit.

This cache will take you to the "Gedauer Conglomerate", in the nature reserve "Tatternsteine mit Talaue" in the valley of Gedau near Stolberg, which was formed about 320 million years ago (in the upper Carboniferous), that lies in the "Lower Rhine Basin" on the edge of the "Rhenish Slate Mountains".
The "Tatternsteine" called, an approximately 5m high rock formation, emerged from the deposits in a wide river delta from a mountain range (today "Eifel") derived river, located in the southern of the valley of "Gedau" and consists predominantly of weathered rock fragments and debris. Throughout time, this solidified, and so it was created a kind of natural concrete, the "Godauer Conglomerate".
Conglomerates are mostly coarse-grained sediment particles of different rock types. Due to the longer transport this can also be fine-grained to sandy, and have a rounded shape. The binder is clayey, siliceous or calcareous material, which determine the hardness of the conglomerate.
The "Gedauer Conglomerate" consists of coarse-grained, well-rounded quartz pebbles and weak-rounded lydites and also from individual mudstone and coal fragments. The siliceous materials give the high hardness to the rock. It reaches a thickness of up to 30m.
To the above-described manner, the entire trough area of the Inde, formed ridges in the region of Stolberg but they usually achieve a significantly lower thickness.
