Sanbon Enoki "Three Hackberry Trees" Park is a Musashimurayama-City designated historic spot.
About 200 years ago, three youths had a competition of shooting arrows from a nearby hill top.
They planted Hackberry trees in the places where the arrows fell. From this event, the tree in this park grew to be the largest of the three trees.
This big tree became a landmark and a rest station for foot travelers in old days.
Now we know the position of this tree with a GPS. But when foot travellers from long ago reached this tree in the middle of a trip, they felt at ease and where able to rest.

「三本榎」
武蔵村山市指定史跡の三本の榎があります。
約200年前、腕自慢の若者三人が遠矢の競争をして、近くの山から弓を引き、矢の落ちた場所に榎の木を植え、それぞれの名前、乙幡、加藤、奥住を付けたという伝説があります。
この三本榎史跡公園の中にあるのは三本の榎の中ではもっとも大きい乙幡榎です。
歩いて旅をする昔の人々にとって、大きな樹は目印であり休憩所でした。
多くの街道筋には今でも大きな樹が残され、何らかの言い伝えが残されています。
今では、GPSを使って何処に居ても現在位置がわかる様に成りました。
でも、旅の途中で、樹を見て心安らぐ思いは同じかもしれません。
