This cache was originally placed by Senior Seekers and was one of the first in Bridgeport. He's been unable to keep it going so I'm going to bring it back with some changes. It's too good of a cache to let go. This five stage multi-cache is located in the Bridgeport Cemetery, which is near where route 131 (old route 73) ends at route 50 in Bridgeport, WV. It is intended to provide a somewhat challenging but historical and, we hope, interesting mini-tour of this beautiful cemetery.
We suggest you allow at an hour or so to complete this cache, but if you rush through without taking time to see the sites, it probably can be done in less time. To make it worthwhile, we suggest you take your time and look around even more than needed to find the cache. Keep in mind that the cemetery closes at dark and no one is to be inside the gates after this. Please show proper respect while there.
Stage One:
You need to locate 2 grave markers at this site and use the information on them to get the coordinates for the following stage.
1) Joseph Johnson, who was the only man west of the Alleghenies to serve as governor of Virginia. Remember, this area was part of the state of Virginia until 1863. Once you locate this marker, note the year of his birth and subtract 1275 from it to obtain ABC.
2) Locate a monument in the same area dedicated to the founder of Boothsville, WV. with quite a cheerful epitaph and subtract 1402 from his year of death to get DEF.
Take some time to look around this, the oldest, part of the cemetery where you can also find a soldier named Joseph Davisson who was at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78 with General George Washington and who married the cousin of a famous poet. You can also find the sight of the original Simpson Creek Baptist Church and meeting house built in 1770 along with many other old gravesites.
Stage Two: N 39 ° 17. ABC' W080 ° 14. DEF'
You are looking for the small in-ground grave marker of a Pony Express rider and cousin of a famous American writer and humorist. You will recognize the name when you see it. When you find the marker, subtract 1116 from his year of birth to obtain GHI and 1555 from his year of death to obtain JKL.
This is also a beautiful area of the cemetery, although not nearly as old as the first stage.
Stage Three: N 39 ° 17. GHI' W080 º 14. JKL'
At this stage, you will find a bronze monument. With a chapter from the Bible. Subtract 23 from the chapter number to get MN.
O= The number of letters in the first word of the verse.
P= The number of letters in the 8th word of the verse.
Q= The number of letters in the 3rd word of the verse.
Stage Four: N 39 ° 17.7MN, W080 ° 14.OPQ
Another bronze monument depicting a scene. To the right, you'll see a list of names and what they are doing in the scene. Using the numbers by their names,
R is "The beloved"
T is "Sincere and honest"
U is "Old and rugged"
V is "Sincere and honest"
W is "Brother of John"
Stage Five: N39° 17.R0T, W080° 14.UVW.
The final stage is a large pelican box. There is parking nearby, please don't block the road. Use stealth, this cache has been muggled many times.
