Geocache Description:

The best friend a girl could ever have:

Panza
Dec 1995 - Mar 2010

This series of caches are a memorial to and celebration of her life. So many adventures over the years, this cache represents just one of a lifetime of memories.

Alternate Working Title: Submarine Races

This is the first of the series - hidden on what would turn out to be Panza's last walk along snake road.

After her passing, and the emotional events that followed - next thing we knew Free Heeler was pregnant, and another adventure ensued. We walked here with Dingo, then during the pregnancy - and now with Baby Z. She's been along for a few finds now - but confirming the coords today represented her first hide.

I've checked on the cache several times since hiding it over a year ago: At one point, it was found by 'civilians' who signed the log and noted:

"This is the second one of these we've found"

When I originally hid this cache, my intention was to call it Submarine Races, considering the nice wide turnout and sweeping views from this spot. Would have been a pretty nice spot to park - and I imagine park they did, back in the day.

Which brings me to my question: I'm a relative Martinez "old timer", having lived here for more than 20 years. However, Snake Road (Carquinez Scenic Drive) has been closed just as it is today, ever since my very first visit, decades ago. Now I expect some of you have been in the area even longer than I - so, if you know any (factual or anecdotal) stories about the closing of Snake Road, or the days when it went through from Martinez to Port Costa - share your insight in your logs. Perhaps you even watched a submarine race or two from this spot?

As for the cache - a medium-sized container suitable for most trades, TBs and coins. Just over a mile walk each way, from 'my end' - you may be able to park closer. No poison oak anywhere in play the last several times I've checked on the cache - but the stuff is insidious, AND all around, so - stay sharp, and let me know if it encroaches on the cache.
