Geocache Description:

Mossy Mystery 02 (WSSS 06)

This is the sixth of a short series of caches on Mt Wellington that will take you to several historic places that are not often visited these days (and that do not already have a cache nearby). The series is called Wellington's Seldom Seen Sites.

The locations of some of Mt. Wellington's historic places are not generally available. The public access version of the document "Focus On The Fringe – Layered Use & Meanings in a Natural Context Wellington Park Historic Heritage Inventory & Audit Project" describes many sites but states that detailed locations are not given to reduce the potential for vandalism.

I endorse this sentiment however I also believe that such sites are part of our common heritage. These "secret" sites are occasionally visited by, for example, knowledgeable (and responsible) bush walkers. Responsible geocachers should also have the opportunity to visit such interesting and historic places. My approach to this dilemma is to give coordinates in the form of a puzzle that can only be solved by getting information that is revealed in another reasonably difficult puzzle cache. (My assumption is that only experienced geocachers will solve the puzzles and my hope (and belief) is that they are responsible and will respect these valuable sites.) This particular cache is associated with an old hut site.

Old Hut Site

There were numerous recreational huts built on Mt. Wellington in the last 200 years. Unfortunately the vast majority no longer exist. For some, physical evidence still remains. In this case a levelled terrace can be seen and nearby some rock walls (collapsed chimney?). The terrace has been cut into the slope on one side and built up with a rock wall on the other. I have not been able to determine the name of the hut(s) built here but nevertheless the site is worth a visit.

While exploring the site you will discover another track that could be used, by the more adventurous, for the return trip.

The Cache

The cache is near to a named trail and some distance from the actual Old Hut site. The cache is in a small Sistema box with a black bag as the outer layer. The box contains details on how to find the Old Hut site together with a log book, pen and stash note.

Coordinates

The coordinates for this cache are revealed in the final cache of "Powerful Chemical Conundrums 13" GC2Y3WM. Please note that the the ruins site is under dense tree cover that will interfere with GPSR reception.

Logging Visit

Finders please help preserve the anonymity of this site and cache. When writing your logs please do not include details like track names, names of nearby caches or locations etc. (Please also take the same precautions with any photos and their captions.)
