Blackburn Buccaneer

The Blackburn Buccaneer’s first flight was in 1958. After the Russians had built the Sverdlov class cruiser which was faster and more armed than the British or German ship equivalents, the British Navy decided to build a low-level strike aircraft with nuclear weapon delivery capability rather than a new ship to counter the Sverdlov. A tender was issued to Blackburn to design this aircraft. Owing to secrecy, the aircraft was called BNA (Blackburn Naval Aircraft) or BANA (Blackburn Advanced Naval Aircraft) in documents, leading to the obvious nickname of "Banana Jet". The Blackburn Buccaneer is 19.33 m long and has a wingspan of 13.41 m. It weighs 14,000 kg (empty) and maximum speed is 1,074 km/h with a range of 3,700 km.
