Geocache Description:

This new bridge replaces the old Pony Truss Bridge, in the vicinity of the Woodland Lodge, that was once the main access road into the park.

In 2000, Turtle River State Park flooded due to an unusual June weather event that dumped up to 21" of rain in the watershed in one night! As a result, the old Pony Truss Bridge, in the vicinity of the Woodland Lodge, choked full of down trees and debris - pushing the river out of it's banks and directly at the Woodland Lodge. As a result, the Woodland Lodge and staff residences to the west, along with the CCC Memorial Shelter, were all heavily impacted by floodwaters. These facilities were all constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp, in the 1930's, as part of the Parks' original infrastructure. The beautiful and historical Woodland Lodge suffered great damage during the flood. Due to its historical significance, the lodge was taken apart, board by board, stored, and three years later reassembled on higher ground. Today, you can see the outline of the original location of the Woodland Lodge, along with its' hand crafted fireplace, which still stands.

Other historically significant sites you might visit while at Turtle River State Park would include: the picnic shelters in the Hillside Picnic Area; a shelter and granite keystone bridge in the vicinity of Trappers Rest Primitive Area; the Hollows Picnic Area Shelter and stone bridge abutments; and the CCC Memorial Shelter and Dam.

All North Dakota State Parks require the purchase and display of a daily ($5) or annual ($25) vehicle permit upon entrance.
