Lyman Hall


Delegate from Georgia; born in Wallingford, New Haven County, Conn., April 12, 1724; was graduated from Yale College in 1747; studied theology for a short time and in 1749 began preaching; later studied medicine and commenced practice in Wallingford; moved to Dorchester, S.C., in 1752, and, a few years later, to the "Midway District," Liberty County, Ga., where he continued the practice of his profession and also engaged in the cultivation of rice; member of the conventions of 1774 and 1775 held in Savannah; Member of the Continental Congress 1775-1777; a signer of the Declaration of Independence; upon the fall of Savannah in 1778 and the capture of Sunbury, when his property was despoiled, went north with his family; resumed residence in Savannah in 1782 and again practiced medicine; Governor of Georgia in 1783; judge of the inferior court of Chatham County, which office he resigned upon moving to Burke County; died in Burke County, Ga., October 19, 1790; interment on his plantation near Shell Bluff, Burke County, Ga.; reinterment in 1848 beneath the monument in front of the courthouse on Greene Street, Augusta, Ga.
