Geocache Description:

Welcome to Kerikeri. Home to Citrus growing and Wineries.

Horticulture is the backbone of the Kerikeri District

In the spring of 1819, John Butler planted 100 grape vines and 100 fruit trees along with 85 other trees - the first planned garden near Kemp House was established.

A century later the innovative phase of Kerikeri's horticultural history began under the direction of George Edwin Alderton. The North Auckland Land Development Corporation purchased 6817 acres from the Riddell Estate, a sheep and cattle station.

For the planned group settlement, shelter belts of gum trees, and other species were planted to protect the 10,000 citrus trees acquired from Australia.

During the 1980s, kiwifruit were used to overplant many of the citrus blocks and kiwifruit were marketed to the rest of the world.

Grape vines and Wine established a commercial presence in Kerikeri in the early 90's. Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Merlot, Malbec, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chambourcin, Syrah and Cabernet Franc are all grown here.

The Planting of Kerikeri in the 1920s through to 1990s is a remarkable, colourful, and interesting period of Kerikeri's horticultural history.

Contiunue up the hill for a great view to the north over Kerikeri.
