Geocache Description:

Public Cemetery of Bute

The name proclaims it all and on the 11th of January 1888, it was.The area, Section 340, Hundred of Wiltunga.Four acres of this site was grubbed, cleared and fenced in 1894.
Mrs Thurza Read procured the first block for her husband ,who had been buried three years previously in the Barunga Cemetery. It was her wish that his body be exhumed and buried in the Bute Cemetery. Thus William Read's headstone, dated 1892, pre-dates the formation of the cemetery in 1895.
A licensed surveyor was engaged to re-survey the cemetery in 1930.It was three seperate sections: one for the Anglican Church, another for the Roman Catholic Church, with the third and largest section being for the general public.
Fortunatly you will be looking in an area that has not yet been grubbed and the only few diggings are those of the undeground mutton variety.
