This section of the Big Tancook Island Road is known locally as the New Road. It was built during the 1950's to shorten the trek from the north side of the island to the south side. Before this road was built, people (including the school children) had to either walk through pastures, over fences and through a path in the woods, or travel the longer route along the South East Cove Road.
