Located between Seyðisfjörður and Reyðarfjörður one can find
Mjóifjörður, a fjord with a length of round about 18 kilometers.
The road 952, the Mjóafjarðarvegur, leads on gravel into the valley
of this fjord, meaning the only connection between the small
village Brekka and the town Egilsstaðir.
At the end of road 952 one can find the lighthouses of
Dalatangi. Yes, indeed, two lighthouses! The older one was built in
1899 and is more a house than a tower. The younger one has been
raised approx. 20 years later like many other lighthouses in
Iceland. Typical for those lighthouses from the 1920ies are the
colors yellow/orange and the battlement at the top of the
tower.

In summer the road is passable for cars, but you have to be very
patient, the road winds up and down through the northern incline of
Mjóifjörður, passes several creeks and smaller valleys. To enter
the valley, you have to pass the heights of Mjóafjarðarheiði. In
June 2011 it was completely covered with snow (except the road). To
check if the road is in good condition, please refer to www.vegagerdin.is. If this site is
telling that the road is closed, than there is definitely a good
reason for that!!
When laying out the cache we met the operator of the lighthouse,
a friendly guy who shew us the emergency power generators in the
lighthouse building.
In Dalatangi no dogs are allowed, probably because of the horses
and sheep running around. Please respect this when visiting the
lighthouse and let the dog inside the car. The initial inventory of
the cache box is:
- log (stays inside the cache)
- Travelbug Rin Tin Plastic
- Geocoin TrekkingIceBaer
Have fun on the journey to this cache!
