Geocache Description:

This cache is based on the locations and characteristics from Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles and takes you from near Dartmoor Prison to the Great Grimpen Mire from the book. See the long description for details.

The Hounds Lair takes you on the Trail of one of the most famous of all adventures, those of the fictional Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, and the real Arthur Conan Doyle. You will start in Princetown, Dartmoor, that built up around the very real Dartmoor Prison, and in fact, in its very centre is the High Moorland Centre, a free entry museum about all the mysteries and wildlife of the moor. As you enter you will come face to face with both Conan Doyle, and Holmes himself!! This centre was formerly the Duchy Hotel, where Conan Doyle really stayed in 1901 (at co-ordinates N50* 32.656 W003* 59.479). You should turn and face the door because ‘the game is afoot’. Walk out and down the steps and turn right. You should then turn left in front of the old Inn’s and then an immediate right again into Tor Royal Lane. This is a long walk into the wilderness so take a carriage and follow the road a couple of miles down to White Works Tin Mine. You can leave the carriage at the small bridge, or outside the cottages just further on. Across the road you will find a small stream. Follow this until you come to an old granite wall and then turn right and travel to co-ordinates N50* 30.873 W003* 57.129. These are just below Goldsmiths Cross. By reaching this point you have travelled around the western edges of the Mire, which was the inspiration for the Grimpen Mire, haunted by the Hound. Time to take the plunge….but hopefully not literally! You will find a path just below the Cross, at exactly the co-ordinates above. FOLLOW THIS PATH AT ALL TIMES ACROSS THE MIRE TO THE CACHE. If you reach a timber footbridge you have gone too far. Turn around a walk exactly 34 paces back to the cache. This is the Hounds Lair, so make it quick, (please take some photo’s and put them on the site), and don’t get caught in the dark or the mist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would like to thank Dr Watson for his kind permission to allow me to place this cache!
