Logging railroads were temporary affairs not meant for much over two years use. When the area was logged out the rails and ties were removed to use in the nexr area to be logged.
Usually not much attention was paid to roadbeds. In this case the small rise was enough for the cut to be made. This cut was probably made by blasting and horse drawn fresnos to remove the rubble. This was aspur south from the Clark Valley to Howard Mountain line.
The formerly standing stump sheltering the cache was among the first to be logged to make way for the cut. The stump was standing while the logging trains rumbled throug the cut.
