Small plastic container placed at ground level at the side of the road. Small lay-by available next to the cache. Large stone lies at the side of the cache and I have cut down some of the nettles so that cache is easy to reach. The cache is not in the wall. MIND THE NETTLES PLEASE although cache is now slightlyaway from main nettle group.
This is a roadside cache which should be a quick park and grab although I have made an effort to hide it in such a way that it's not easily visible to a casual passer-by but partly visible to a keen-eyed cacher. It is not buried nor is it in or on a dry stone wall. Look out for a small lay-by just past the entrance to Plas Tirion Farm and look for a standing stone on top of a small hillock in the field on the right as you drive from the direction of Llanrug village. This standing stone is roughly level with the layby and there are some large oak trees over in the field quite close to GZ. Please make every effort to replace the cache in the exact position you find it This is not an ancient standing stone but one of four standing stones placed in the area to mark the battles of Hugh Rowlands in the Crimean War. He was born in Llanrug on 6th May 1828 and died there on 1st August 1909. His grave can be seen in St Michael's Churchyard in Llanrug. I have found the following information about Hugh Rowlands on Wikipedia. He was a 26 year old Captain in the 41st (Welsh) Regiment of Foot in the British Army during the Crimean War (1853 – 1856) when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross On 5th November 1854 in the Crimea at Inkerman Captain Rowlands and Private John McDermond rescued Colonel Hayly of the 47th Regiment who had been wounded and surrounded by Russian soldiers. He also acted with great gallantry in holding the ground occupied by his advanced picquet against the enemy at the commencement of the Battle of Inkerman He was the first Welshman to win the Victoria Cross. He later achieved the rank of General and received a Knighthood and became General Sir Hugh Rowlands VC, KCB (One standing stone is located near my cache A Walk Down The Drive (GC2NW3G) and a second near my cache Beneath The Standing Stone But Several Yards Away (GC2QG6W) and I only found this one last week although I have walked along this lane several times in recent months.) I hope to locate the fourth standing stone in the near future and maybe have another cache located within view of that one to complete the series)
