Geocache Description:

The story below is absolutely true and did happen at this location. The nearby road leading northward used to be a gravel pit. This trail was the main road in.

It was a typical summer Friday evening in 1967 at the lake. We had almost finished unloading the supplies for the weekend at the cottage our dad, uncle and grandfather had built in 1963. As was often the case, some “necessity” had been left behind. No problem, Tonnancour’s little pink store was just down the road at the corner of M & CC. My brother had just gotten his driver’s license. This would be a perfect time to send him out on his first solo mission.

Mom was famous for her baked beans. We never went to a family picnic, a pot luck dinner or to the cottage without a crock of hot, fresh baked beans. The crock would often sit on the passenger side floor held securely in place between Mom’s feet. When Mike set out on his mission, the crock of beans was yet to be unloaded. The crock still sat on the floor but now unsecured and held upright only by the force of gravity. Off he goes! Over the hill and into the first gentle left curve, no problem. Second curve, a little tighter….oops a little fast….. oh no!! Centrifugal force just trumped gravity. Over the crock went. Here’s where instinct takes over and training goes out the window. The beans spilling out of the overturned crock became priority #1! So what does he do? Yep, he forgets about driving the car, reaches down and sets the crock back up right. It didn’t stay upright for long though. He already learned that centrifugal force will overturn crocks. Now he’s learning that a vehicle bouncing over off road terrain will do the trick also. He got the car stopped, got the crock up right….again, surveyed the 10 or so beans clinging to the outside wall of the crock and took a deep breath. “Settle down, you’re OK, It’s only some beans…… OH NO!!! How’d that crack all the way across the windshield get there?? “

Flight instructors preach that the first rule in dealing with an in flight emergency is to “remember to fly the airplane.” It didn’t take flying lessons to teach Mike that rule. All it took was a small curve, a little too much speed and a crock of beans.
