Geocache Description:

The first cache in The NEPA Ghost Towns Geocache series, an ammo can placed in the long abandoned town of Edgerton, PA.

The NEPA Ghost Towns Geocache series will take you to abandoned towns throughout the Northeastern PA landscape. While visiting these towns you can see a lot; signs of civilization are everywhere if you look hard enough. Please remember when you are visiting these sites that it is hallowed ground. When you arrive at the GZs, I encourage you to stop and take a look around for a moment and just imagine that when people were asked, “Where do you call home?”- this was their answer.

*One town will be excluded from this series due to all ways to access it being located on private property. I may do a tribute cache for this town nearby.

Edgerton, Pennsylvania was a mining town located just north of what is now Jermyn / Mayfield PA. It was abandoned in 1920 after the mine and company shop were closed. Most of its residents moved down the mountain in to what is now Jermyn, PA.

The cache itself is a camouflaged ammo can located uphill from the town. The cache was originally placed in two nearby locations but had be be moved twice because it was to close to other Edgerton caches. Please place this cache back EXACTLY as you found it. Many people, including Boy Scout troops and historical societies, visit what’s left of the town regularly so not re-hiding the cache exactly as you found it can easily result in the cache being spotted and muggled.

To access the cache, start at the parking lot of Aylesworth Park (N41.31.280 W075.31.655). Take the trail up past the field and bear left. Continue to the bridge (Waypoint N41.31.742 W075.30.777) and follow the trails to the GZ. The hike is about 3 miles round trip. There are plenty of other excellent caches in the area by ElToro76 that I would recommend checking out.

The coordinates below are provided as a courtesy to anyone interested in seeing more of the town. They are NOT required to complete this cache, but they are really cool and definitely worth checking out:

School house foundation: N 41° 31.812 W 075° 30.725
The school’s foundation may look very small when you see it; this is because only girls went to school here. The boys started working in the mine at a very young age.

Company general store: N 41° 31.784 W 075° 30.603

Base of the Breaker / Mine area: N 41° 31.763 W 075° 30.597

Pipes supplying water to breaker (very small, laying across the trail): N 41° 31.753 W 075° 30.650

An appropriate amount of blaze orange apparel is encouraged.

Note: I don't force anyone to search for my geocaches. Please remember that you assume all responsibility when geocaching.
