Geocache Description:

Cache is a bison tube hidden on an island in the Charles. You'll need a boat and some agility along with sharp eyes to find and log this one. I wouldn't call this one for the whole family, but then again I might not do it alone! Log only, BYOP.

I created this cache to entertain those that, like me, are looking for a cache that offers a bit more than the average cache. It's not easy to get to, not easy to grab, and isn't for everyone. So, with that being said, here we go!

Anyone who spends time on urban part of The Charles is no doubt familiar with the island by the Watertown Yacht Club - "Sunrise Island". Even if you're not yet familiar it shouldn't take long to find because it enjoys a monopoly of island status as far as the urban section of river is concerned. If you look at older maps of the river you'll see that wasn't always the case though. Prior to 1948 this island was actually two islands with a small channel between them.

What happened? Well, according to news clippings you can access through the Watertown Yacht Club's home page it seems that when the MDC and Army Corps of Engineers last dredged the basin in that area they chose to dump the debris right in the middle of the island, creating the single island that offers those who want a moments reprieve from the traffic of the main thoroughfare a welcome detour.

And in this two-become-one occurrence lies some of the challenge of this cache. As you tour the island, you'll see there are not that many places to easily pull up your boat which can be a bit of a handicap. What you don't see is that the middle of the island - you guessed it - where the channel used to be is somewhat of a swampy mess. The marshy area is not impassable, but pull up at the wrong one of those already limited spots and you could find your trip to be somewhat indirect. Of course there are no trails on the island, but some recent conservation work on the island has blazed some game trails that will make your trip a little easier if you happen upon them (PLEASE take note that these trails seem to be related to studying waterfowl on the island so be mindful of where you trek). If you get lucky and pick the right approach you'll find getting to the area of the cache to be quite easy indeed.

Once you get past the marsh the rest is up to you. Good luck and have fun!
