Geocache Description:

The cache is placed at Whitehaven Welcome Center, located off I-24 at exit 7. You are looking for a camoed plastic lock box on the grounds, not located inside the Welcome Center itself. Should be an excellent location to exchange travel bugs.

Whitehaven is a well known majestic landmark to the people of Paducah and the surrounding area. The original mansion has been around since the 1860's. The mansion underwent major renovations in the early 1900's, transforming it from an ordinary farmhouse into a grceful mansion. At one time it seemed as though this mansion was destined to be destroyed. The last owners left in 1968 with the belief that the house would be torn down due to the construction of I-24. The house was not destroyed, but due to it being vacant, a great deal of vandalism occurred. All of the original stained glass was removed or stolen, the interior mirrors were destroyed, and most of the doors and windows were broken. Water leaks also damaged most of the ceiling and floors. It appeared the house was doomed until 3 key events occurred in the spring of 1981. First, the Smith Family sold the house and property to Paducah Community College. Second, the state of KY relocated the money for building an I-24 Tourism Welcome Center in the Paducah area. Third, and most importantly, Ky Secretary of Transportation Frank Metts and Gov. John Y. Brown Jr. threw their entire support to restoring the Smith Mansion for the Tourist Welcome Center instead of building a new one. The Classic Revival style mansion has been restored to it's late 19th century granduer. The house now serves as a state welcome center, symbolizing KY's location as a gateway to the South and offering visitors a glimpse of KY's history. Whitehaven has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. It is recognized as having outanding historic and architectural significance.

Whitehaven Welcome Center contains memorabilia of Paducah native Alben W. Barkley, vice president under Harry Truman, including the first U.S. vice presidential flag. Free guided tours are availible daily. The Welcome Center is open daily 24 hours. Everyone visiting please stop in the visitors center and sign the guest book. Whitehaven Staff and groundskeepers are aware of the cache placement. This cache was placed under permit #01-0261-11.
