Geocache Description:

Small loc and loc container with contents designed to focus on the Aquatic Visitor Center. Wheelchair and kid friendly.

Welcome to the Aquatic Visitor Center on South Bass Island. This current building was built in 1915 and for many years operated as a fish hatchery. Eggs were collected by commercial fishermen and several species of Lake Erie fish were raised here. By the 1980's, research done in the lake showed that Mother Nature and proper catch limits did a better job of maintaining populations, and stocking young fish in the lake wasn't needed.

Walleye and yellow perch are the two most important sport fish in the Western Lake Erie Basin. The area is considered one of the best fishing locations in the country. The Western Basin, where you are standing, is the shallowest yet the most productive part of this Great Lake.

The hatchery was closed in the 1980's and now the building functions as an educational center for the public. After you find the cache, take the time to explore the hatchery if you are there in the summer season. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday 11:00 to 5:00 from the third week in June until the third week in August. Take a tour with a OSU Stone Lab student then let the kids go fishing with poles provided by the center!

Happy caching and fishing.
