Geocache Description:

I have driven past this quiet park many times and wondered what the name of this place was called and why there wasn't a sign posted here. So I did some research. The park is Augusta Wisconsin City Park, originally called the First Ward Park when it was established in 1885. The park sits on 5 acres of land that was purchased by the Augusta City Council from Sol Barber for $300. In 1935 the City Council tried to sell the park, but it is believed that due to the Great Depression no bids were received on the property. In 1890 the first shelter was built and a well was dug. They also planted an additional 72 trees around the park. Through the years this park has been the site of Memorial Day Programs, also known as Decoration Days during the 1887's, Fourth of July picnics and many church services have been held here by surrounding area churches. In 1971 two new shelters,a restrooms, playground equipment and some roads were added along with some landscaping. A sign was erected and in 1984 a historian named Lloyd Holden listed the history of the park on the back of the sign. In 2009 the sign was removed because of its' condition. This is a very quiet place to come and visit. They say that some of the trees you might find here are more than a century old. I hope you enjoy your visit here. The cache is a short walk from the edge of the park look for a deer trail.

Permission was granted for placing this cache here in the park by Mayor Delton Thorson of the City of Augusta.
