The Stewart family has a long history in eastern Kentucky.
Doctor Jasper "Byrd" Stewart was perhaps the best known in Knott
county. Although he had no formal medical training, he tended the
ailments of local residents for over 50 years, traveling to their
homes on horseback or on foot, often for little or no
compensation.
I had the honor of becoming acquainted with two of Jasper's more
illustrious descendants. Grandson Albert Stewart was
an author known for promoting young writers as much as his own
writings. Great grandson Art Stamper was a well-known fiddle player
who took great joy in passing the music on to young folks in his
last years.
