..so let's go where we're happy... Llanharan Cemetery.
A short multi-cache at one of the quietest spots in the village.
A Series of burial acts, commencing with an act of 1853, authorised the provision of burial grounds by local authorities. These 'municipal cemeteries' were additional to the graveyards attached to the parish churches and nonconformist chapels, many of which, particularly in populous towns, had become full by the mid-nineteenth century.
Most of the municipal cemeteries in the former counties of Mid and South Glamorgan are now administered by the new Unitary Authorities, in this case Rhonnda Cynon Taff.
Llanharan's cemetery was opened in 1921 and is still in use today despite its small size. Originally burials were kept to the patch to the left of the main path leading from the gates it has expanded to other areas over the last couple of decades.
On a personal note... A number of Mr.Rollwrong's family are buried here and although cemeteries are currently sombre and respectful places one needs only to go back to Victorian times to see a completely different attitude to the dead. Picnics in graveyards were common and many families with larger mausoleums would think nothing of taking tea inside with the remains of their loved ones.
That said, please respect the feelings of those around you when visiting. Although this isn't a particularly busy burial site, this is a quiet place for contemplation.
On to the cache...
The final cache IS NOT within (or on) the boundary of the cemetery. The clues to find it are though. We toyed with the idea of using gravestone details for the clues but believe that since most of the burials are relatively recent that something else should be used...
...we used signs. In fact, you'll find three of them at (or just within) the cemetery gates.
One is brown and cream, one is green and gold, one is circular. So for the final coordinates you are looking for...
Brown and Cream Sign
A = The last digit of the earliest year
D = The second digit of the latest year
Green and Gold Sign
B = The last number on the sign
C = The second digit of the only year
E = The last number on the sign
Circular Sign
F = The only digit on the sign!
The final is at *** N 51 32.ABC, W 003 26.DEF ***
Parking is permitted on the main road at the gates themselves (but be careful with young cachers) and the final is not too far away... There was a little GPS bounce at GZ so we've upped the difficulty a little to compensate. Good luck!
Congratulations to MORRISMINORS for being the FTF!!!
