Geocache Description:

This is part of 2.5 mile walking trail and geocaching loop. This small cemetery belonged to Fort Sheridan. The first burial at the site occurred in 1890. It remains active.

The cemetery is maintained by Lake County Forest Preserves, through agreement with the US Army. It's owned and operated by the Fort McCoy - a US Army base near Sparta, Wisconsin. There are more than 2,000 soldiers and their family members buried at Fort Sheridan Post Cemetery.

here are many people of note buried at this cemetery, but take a moment to visit some of the graves. At the NW corner of the Cemetery, there are several German POWs that died while being interned at Fort Sheridan during WW2. Once a year, the German Consulate from Chicago places wreaths on their graves. Immediately to the south of the POW, there is a section for children of Military families who died while their sponsor was stationed in this area. I can remember the large number of internments during the polio epidemic in the early 1950s.

Be sure to just take a look before moving on to the next cache.

Additionally, there is a marker in the Cemetery to one of the soldiers, Private 1st Class Ervin C. Staples, executed during the Malmedy massacre of WW2.

For those interested in the complete history of this Military Cemetery, a book has been published by the Zion Genealogical Society in 1996.

This cache is part of 2.5 mile walking trail and geocaching loop. This needs to be put back in its spot to avoid being washed away in a flood.
