A cache next to a nice lookout on the North coast of Trinidad
The cache is on the way to the ground radar of the "Ballistic Missile Early Warning System" (BMEWS).
Chaguaramas National Park, Trinidad. This used to be a US military base, including during World War Two.
From these times remains a well-kept asphalt road going up the mountain.
It will take 15 to 30 minutes walk (depending on your speed) on this asphalt road (with no cars as the entrance is usually closed by a barrier).
Half of the way is flat (until the very nice 'bamboo cathedral', which is nothing constructed by mankind), the rest is pretty steep but you can do it walking or even cycling.
On the way, if you are quiet enough, you can have the chance to see monkeys: small brown capucins and bigger, orange, howler monkeys. The capucins at least (I'm not sure about the howler monkeys) are feral animals, i.e. domesticated animals that have returned to wild state. They were pet animals to american soldiers at the base, who released them into the wild when they left the country.
At the curve in which the cache is hidden, you will enjoy very scenic views of the North coast of Trinidad.
The cache is a mid-size official geocaching plastic box. It is hidden at the foot of a tree, hidden under leaves and tree debris.
Some hints are hidden in the pictures attached.
While you're there, continue uphill (you've done a little less than half the way) to the radar station. There is another cache up there!
And there are other caches in the vincinity. If you want another nice hike, try Edith Falls! It's really worth it!
Enjoy beautiful Trinidad and do not litter please!
IMPORTANT NOTE - Please read:
----------------------------
As with every place in the tropics, please be aware of natural dangers you may not have to consider at home!
Look carefully where to step and/or place your hands!
A number of animals rating from annoying to life-threatening can be found in Trinidad!
It is always a good idea to use a stick to knock around overgrown or obstructed spots before touching or stepping there.
But with these simple precautions, the hike is quite safe!
Original Cache Contents:
- Large pin with star
- 'W' wooden Scrabble letter
- Green Plastic toy soldier (probably a feral American soldier...)
- King of Diamond playing card (with tracking notes on it)
