Doing the Dodds - Rest. Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Moacky: Sadly this cache is being archived. Permission has not been forthcoming. The good news is that the estate boundary is not too far away and on the other side of the line the land owner is much more accommodating to caches. I originally had permission, but on going back for an annual renewal the estate decided they wanted me to pay a fee and take out liability insurance on the cache . It just needs me to stagger up there once more and place a new cache out. Sadly Place Fell is not so fortunate.

Geocache Description:

Another in the Doing the Dodds series. Rest Dodd is to the north of High Street and is wholly within the Martindale deer forest. The deer forest is the home of the largest herd of red deer in England. In the book ‘A Dictionary of Lake District Place-Names’ Diana Whaley suggests that the name means 'the summit used as a resting place.' Rest Dodd is on the boundary of the medieval manor Hartsop, and may have been a resting point for those walking the bounds. A Dodd is commonly a steep or rounded, compact summit.

The cache is under rocks about 70 metres to the south of the cairn. The cache site is clearly in view on the approach from The Knott. As ever with my caches it is a small tupperware box containing only a log book and pencil. Please check the spoilers as it's a long way to go for a DNF.

The cache is placed with the permission of Dalemain Estate - home of the world marmalade championships amongst other things ! Dalemain Estate manages the deer forest.
