Geocache Description:

This cache affords you a breathtaking view of the mouth of Cork harbour.

Congratulations kissmagdi on the FTF

At 1.30 pm on Thursday 11 April 1912, Titanic departed Cork Harbour and were you at the GZ you would have been able to see her for the final time and seen her tenders as they brought the lucky few who left her at this point.

In a Westerly direction is the Roches Point lighthouse - now silent. The Daunt Rock lightship was visible from this location when it was in service (see links). On a clear day, you will be able to see the old head of Kinsale lighthouse. Ballycotton lighthouse is along the coast in an Easterly direction. These lighthouses were built to protect shipping from the perils of the storms that rage from the sea - especially in winter.

Although this is a tranquil spot on a calm summer's day, it is exciting and elemental in the rough wind. See the links for the list of ship wrecks in the near vicinity - astonishing how many. Some are quite recent, some are better known than others. With the development of GPS, lighthouses serve a less important function and are slowly beginning to retire. The foghorn no longer sounds out, warning of the danger of lurking rocks. The light is automated. Ships pick their own way into the harbour, aided by the same technology that brought you here.

This cache contains only carefully selected items of a maritime nature - it is a shipwreck/lighthouse themed cache. Please do not remove an item unless you replace it with another of a similar nature. This is the function of the cache - to collect maritime paraphernalia from around the world and share it too. Please respect its function (so no shells from the beach!)
