Geocache Description:

The new Peace Bridge in Derry/Londonderry opened with a festival over the weekend of Saturday 25th and Sunday the 26th of June 2011

Please log your DNFs so that I can keep up to date with the status of this cache. Thank you.

The Peace Bridge is one of the largest and most iconic projects to be supported under the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund’s Peace III Programme (2007-2013). More than £14m has been provided for the successful delivery of the bridge with match-funding provided by the Department for Social Development (NI) and the Department of the Environment, community and local government.

Tá an Droichead Síochána ar cheann de na tionscadail is mó agus is íocónaí a fuair tacaíocht faoi Chiste Forbraíochta Réigiúnaí na hEorpa de Chlár Síochána II (2007-2013). Cuireadh breis agus £14m ar fáil don tionscadal seo agus tá cistiú meaitseála á theacht ón Roin Forbartha Sóisialta (TÉ) agus ón Roinn Comhshaoil, Pobail agus Rialtais Áitiúla.

The bridge is primarily constructed from steel in the floor box sections and the pylons. The railings, rope and other fixtures are stainless steel and other non-ferrous metals with wooden benches placed at each of the two pylons. Laminated glass screens have been installed with the seats and especially at the point where the railway passes underneath so no objects can be accidentally knocked into the path of a train. The bridge is completely covered with CCTV cameras for security and crime prevention. The walkway is lit at low level with discharge lamps. It cost £14m to build and is the length of two and a half football pitches. In 2010, the Minister for Regional Development, Conor Murphy, mooted the possibility of building a new railway station that would connect the railway with the Peace Bridge across the Foyle, bringing it closer to the centre of the city. The bridge itself should cut down the time needed to walk from the city centre to the railway station instead of having to take the Craigavon Bridge.

About the name: The Nationalist community calls the city by the name Derry while the Unionist community calls the city by its full name Londonderry. Most locals call the city Derry regardless. Its possible that local celebrity and radio presenter Gerry Anderson was one of the first to call the city Stroke City in a neutral manner so as not to alienate or support any one view. In the irish gaelic language the city is called Doire.

Please be careful when retrieving and replacing the cache as it may end up in the drink. There was nowhere to put it on the bridge itself as the concealed spots are non ferro-magnetic (won't rust). The cache is a camoflage tape covered 35mm film canister with a log roll. You will need your own pen. It should be easy enough to locate and grab. Use the 'Ah! I need to tie my laces!' excuse. Ta, very much!

Derry~Londonderry made history after winning its bid to be the first ever UK City of Culture in 2013. The momentous win means that in 2013 Derry~Londonderry will play host to a year-long celebration of culture in the city, opening its doors to visitors from across the world..

Culture Company 2013 has reworked its logo for the delivery phase of the 2013 City of Culture project..

The new logo is an evolution of the campaign logo, the Awen, into the city’s most iconic new structure, the Peace Bridge. We felt it vital to retain the essence of the Awen, a Celtic symbol representing inspiration, spirituality and creativity. And to this end, the colouring of the logo has been retained as has the three-stranded theme..

The Peace Bridge, in keeping with our mission, helps the city tell its new story – in this case, telling the story through the brand. Internationally, the bridge has already become recognised symbol of our new city and connectedness. And, we believe there is no more fitting image with which we could welcome and attract the world to Derry-Londonderry..

The logo apart, our brand and its aspirations remain unchanged, and we are committed to serving the narrative that inspired them..
~Culture Company 2013
