Entstehung der Gletschertöpfe / Formation of glacier mills
[DEU] Gletschertöpfe können durch abfließendes Schmelzwasser entstehen, das sich zu Strömen vereinigt und starke Wirbel bildet. In den Wirbeln herrschen Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 200 km/h und ein hoher Druck. Mitgeführte Sand- und Kiespartikel unterschiedlicher Größe leisten die Haupterosionsarbeit beim Aushöhlen von Felsen. Gletschertöpfe können Durchmesser von mehreren Metern erreichen.

[ENG] Glacier mills can be formed through circulating meltwater with powerful turbulences (high speed up to 200 km/h and high pressure). Rock material of several size and meltwater perform the main erosion of the rocks. Glacier mills may reach a diameter of several meters.

Lage der Gletschertöpfe / Location of glacier mills
[DEU] Im Nationalpark Hohe Tauern liegt das wildromantische Stubachtal. Am Ende des 17 km langen Tals befindet sich der Enzinger Boden mit der Talstation (1480 m ü.d.M.) der Seilbahn „Enzinger Boden – Weißsee“. Erreichbar sind die Gletschertöpfe (1720 m ü.d.M.) auf zwei Wegen:

  • Fahrt mit der Seilbahn von der Talstation bis zur Mittelstation und ca. 10 Minuten leichte Wanderung entlang des Grünsees (für Kinderwagen geeignet) oder
  • Wanderung von der Talstation bis zum Grünsee auf sehr steilem Fahrweg / Wandersteig (ca. 1 Stunde, nicht für Kinderwagen geeignet)
Beide Wege führen euch an den Uferrand des Grünsees mit seinem beeindruckenden Bergpanorama. An den oben angegebenen Koordinaten findet ihr einen großen Felsblock mit einem Hinweisschild auf das Naturdenkmal. Um die Gletschertöpfe zu sehen (ein großer äußerer und ein sehr gut ausgeformter innerer), müsst ihr auf den Felsblock steigen (seid bitte vorsichtig).

[ENG] The wild and romantic valley „Stubachtal” is part of the National Park „Hohe Tauern“. At the end of the valley (length: 17 km) you will find the „Enzinger Boden” with the lower station (1480 m a.s.l.) of the cable car „Enzinger Boden – Weißsee”. There are two alternatives to reach the glacier mills (1720 m a.s.l.):

  • Use of the cable car from the lower station to the middle station and a short hike along lake „Grünsee” (approx. 10 min, stroller accessible) or
  • Hike from the lower station to lake „Grünsee” using a very rampant road way / hiking track (approx. 1 hour, not stroller accessible)
Both ways lead you to water´s edge of lake „Grünsee” with an impressive mountain view. At the coordinates mentioned above you will find a huge rock with an information sign of the natural monument. To see the glacier mills (a great outer one and a well formed inner one) you have to go up the huge rock (please take care).
