Geocache Description:

Brick Pond was originally the location of Weyer-Bauman Brick Works on Elmira's Eastside. Shale mined from the quarries on East Hill was carted down the hill to the Brick Yard, and mixed with clay from the clay pits near Sullivan Street. One day (much to the surprise of the man with the pick and shovel) they dug a little too deep and hit a vein of water from nearby Newtown Creek. Quickly the clay pits became BRICK POND. Elmirans, enterprising as they are, immediately recognized the good fortune of a very clean ice-harvesting pond. The brick works moved to the area near the Church Street entrance from Route 17 I-86. Ice was harvested from Brick Pond until the advent of the electric refrigerator.
