Geocache Description:

This cache is one of several caches placed to celebrating the Bicentennial of Schuylkill County, Pa. In cooperation with the Schuylkill County Bicentennial Committee, these caches are to honor the historical value they possess in our counties developement.

The Red Church was first established in the late 1700's in what was then, Berks County. Within the first couple years after the church was established, it was burned down by local indians in the early days of our developing nation. The congregation held together and re-built their church.
Nearby, in the Red Church Cemetery, is the final resting place for 46 Revolutionary Soldier, that gave their lives so this young developing nation could survive. A monument is erected to honor these brave men.

This link will take you to a listing of the name of the Revolutionary Soldiers and the companies they were affiliated with:

The Red Church also remember those that served our great nation in World War II. A large honor roll resides on their grounds, just west of the church.
Tragically, on June 2, 1959, the Red Church made the news again. This time world wide. On the day, a school bus stopped nearby on then Rt. 122 (now Rt. 61). A propane truck stop in traffic behind the bus, unfortunately, another truck was unable to stop and collided into the propane truck. A small fire developed and as the fire grew and the propane tank was heated beyond its limits, an explosion of the propane tank took the lives of 11 individual. Some were citizens who stopped to help, along with firefighters and emergency personnel. My father was stationed in Germany in the Army and had heard of the incident there.
This little red church, the Zion Luthern Red Church, had a long history, both good and tradgic, and is still going strong today and will be for many days to come.
Here is a link to a story about the explosion by local firefighter, fire instructor and fire historian, Michael Kitsock:
