Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the Calgary Soldier's Memorial, which recognizes the sacrifice of soldiers from Canadian Army Reserve Regiments based in Calgary who were killed in times of war.

More than 3,000 names of those killed in the First World War, the Second World and in Afghanistan are inscribed in this Memorial. Among the names are three winners of the Victoria Cross - The Commonwealth's highest award for bravery. The letters "VC" follow their names to mark this honour. Other awards for bravery, meritorious service or long service are also noted.

South across the river, you can see Mewata Armoury National Historic Site, built between 1915 and 1917. This building is home to most of Calgary's Army Reserve Regiments and many of the soldiers listed on the wall worked and trained there.

Along the front of the Memorial, the dates listed represent key Battle Honours including Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and Dieppe where many of Calgary's soldiers fell while fighting for Canada.

Congrats to ShaunEM for the FTF!
