Minister’s Rock is presently located on town land in East Marion just off of Hermitage Road and Oakdale Avenue.
In 1683 Samuel Shiverick was called by a committee to preach the Word of God in the local vicinity. At that time the area was named “Sepecan” after a nearby Native American village (now spelled Sippican).
Samuel Shiverick was a Huguenot who fled persecution in France. He was given 10 acres adjacent to a lot set aside for the ministry. Since there was no meeting house, Shiverick preached from atop a huge boulder that came to be called Minister’s Rock. The site had been historically used by native peoples as a meeting spot.
