Geocache Description:

Welcome to a series of caches exploring an aircraft landing approach system that was in place during Gander's World War 2 years. A circular string of lights on top of poles circled the Newfoundland Airport. Using an old map to reference against the present day Satellite photo some evidence of the remnants can be located allowing their light to shine again.

The Drem Lighting System is named after the British RAF airfield where it was developed. Landing a high-powered spitfire fighter aircraft was a considerable task in daylight and more so at night. The long nose, bright at night exhaust flare and the wide wing made it difficult for the pilot to see the normal approach lights. The Drem solution consisted of dim-able and shaded to restrict the viewable angle lights placed atop poles at a fixed radius around the airport. At the necessary intervals a curved string of lights would leave the outer perimeter. If followed they and additional lights in a standard fixed pattern would set the pilot up on the runway centerline allowing a successful night time landing.

When attempting the Drem South cache bushwhacking attire is suggested and do not forget your insect repellant in season.

The cache location is in the area of one of many rock piles that were used as a base around the bottom of the light support poles. Additional pole bases line up in the desired east west direction that matches the Drem Lighting layout on the Old map.

Other areas around the airport allow access to a close proximity to the Drem Lighting circular path. The best and most easily observable is on the airport side of Cooper Blvd in the bog. Coming from the north the pole line path would have entered the bog and crosses the present day runway centerline as it nears the roadway, continuing on to cross Cooper and passing through the Dominion store parking lot. The long standing cedar poles were harvested for their found wood but the short stumps poking out of the bog remain.
