A church micro at St Laurence's church in the village of Affpuddle. There are a couple of steps into the churchyard, and wheelchair users would also need assistance in retrieving the cache.
The earliest datable parts of the church, about 1230AD are the east window, the smaller chancel pointed window and the trefoil arch of the south door.
The tower is a fine example of perpendicular period, dated about 1462. There are some nice gargoyles and heraldic beasts around the tower.
The chancel arch is pierced on the north side by hagioscope. On the south side is a doorway and stairs which led up to the rood loft.
The font is 12th century Norman, of Purbeck stone and central sandstone. The pew ends and carved pulpit are particular features of the church. The pews were originally made in 1547 but renewed in 1883. The pulpit is of about the same date.
There are four bells dated 1598, 1655, 1685 and 1722. They are rung by a chiming mechanism.
The co-ordinates are for the church. You will need to look (to the right of the main gate) for the grave of Piers Kenrick Debenham (Great grandson of the founder of Debenhams store). Born 28 July ABCD died 14 September EFGH.
The cache is hidden at N50 DH.(A+D)A(G+E), W002 EG.GDA
Congratulations to Bull Family for FTF!
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list.
